Michigan Section Water for People

Qualifications and Requirements for the Ecuador Experience

1.       You must be a student enrolled as a full time student in a Michigan College or University.

2.       You must be majoring in a relevant engineering or science field.

3.       You must obtain your own passport for travel and receive the required vaccinations for travel to Ecuador. WFP will reimburse the cost of both, if not covered by health insurance. Vaccinations will be determined by your local health agency.

4.       You must join and be active in the Michigan Section Water for People Committee for a minimum of two years including a commitment to work at the Joint Expo for one day in the information booth; and a one day commitment at the annual Michigan Section Meeting either in the information booth or assisting during the WFP activities at the golf outing.

5.       You must make a commitment to write two papers.  The first paper should explain why you wish to participate with WFP activities in Ecuador---in short why do want to go?  The second paper should focus on what you did, what you experienced, and what impact the trip has had on you personally. This paper will be no less than two pages and will be published in the Sections Water Works News.

6.       You will have to give one presentation to either a class in your field of study or at an American Water Works Association meeting.

7.       Airline travel, food, and lodging will be paid for by WFP.  Any other activities will be the responsibility of the student.

8.       You will be under the direction of the Water for People committee group leader.  The group leader will have the final say on itinerary, schedule, and transportation.

9.       A travel insurance policy will be taken out in your name and the WFP committee will pay for the premium.

10.   Papers can be submitted at anytime of the year to the committee chairperson. Please note that our “usual” time of travel is in late September or early October.  Trips are usually seven days long.

11.   Papers will be judged on content by a review committee.  It is our intent that all papers submitted for review will be given a fair and balanced evaluation based upon the sincerity of the commitment to the Michigan Section Water for People goals. The decision of the review committee will be final.  All participants who submit papers for review will be notified in writing of the decision made by the review committee.

12.   Interested parties may submit proposals each year, even if not accepted initially.
